Woman 'ejected' from car in crash outside Auckland KFC while trying to pay for food

February 4, 2019

A woman attempting to pay for her KFC at a drive through was ejected from her car, sustaining serious facial injuries, after accidentally hitting the accelerator.

Police told 1 NEWS they were called to the single-vehicle crash on Hillsborough Road about 10.15pm yesterday.

It appeared the woman dropped her bank card while trying to pay for food at Auckland's Lynfield KFC, then opened the door to pick it up.

As she was doing so she accidentally hit the accelerator, causing the car to crash into the footpath.

At the scene, shift Inspector Kai Shao said police suspected alcohol may have been a factor in the crash, and the serious crash unit will examine the vehicle today.

"It's quite unusual, as you probably can imagine, someone is just trying to do a bit of drive-by shopping and accidentally put the foot on the accelerator and the car just sped up," he said. "As a result, she got ejected from the vehicle."

The woman was taken to hospital to be treated, Mr Shao said.
