A man has been charged with threats to kill and breach of bail after a lengthy standoff with armed police in New Plymouth yesterday.

The 31-year-old is set to appear in court later today.

Police attended what was initially believed to be a family harm matter where the man had breached his bail conditions by going to an address in the suburb of Spotswood.

Residents in the area said they heard loud bangs and the offender screaming at police.

As the man was known to carry firearms and there was concern for others, armed police were dispatched as a precaution, police said in a statement.

The man was located at a property on Paritutu Road and refused to leave.

During the standoff, one person left the property, police said.

Police began negotiations, and almost 11 hours after they were called - just before 9pm - police entered the property and arrested the offender.
