Loud bangs heard as standoff with armed police in New Plymouth continues

February 3, 2019

One person has been arrested after a standoff with armed police in New Plymouth yesterday.

Police managed to arrest the offender at about 9 last night.

A resident on the New Plymouth street where armed police were negotiating with a man says he has heard about six bangs and police are shouting at the man to come out.

The man said he heard about six loud bangs and police had approached the house and were calling out to the man.

Police were called to the address in the morning and said there was only one person at the house of interest.

Spotswood resident Jason Fox lives about seventy metres away.

He said there was a young man in the house with a gun.

He said the man had been yelling and screaming at officers.

"From what I understand he was holding a female, I'm guessing, against her will, and I think there was a young child as well.

"I believe they're both now safe and I think he's still in there with a gun."

Another resident, who did not want to be named, said she was not worried but the police stand-off had gone on for a long time.

"The police have all told us, they've suggested we stay inside.

"Kids are itching to get out on the trampoline, get outside like they do on a hot summer's day and their weekend."

Two ambulances and a fire engine attended the incident.

The cordon has now been stood down.
