Low cloud is causing headaches for people travelling in and out of New Plymouth.

Around 24 flights have been cancelled heading into and out of the area since midday yesterday.

Some flights had also been diverted.

Airport Chief Executive Wayne Wootton told 1 NEWS that just under 2000 passengers have been affected.

He said the low cloud is expected to lift in the next few hours.

Passengers are being told to check with their individual airlines for details around cancellations and delays.
