A fire thought to have been started by a bouncy castle has caused “significant damage” at an indoor sports centre in Nelson.
Fire and Emergency NZ has told 1 NEWS crews were called to the Action Indoor Sports Centre on McPherson St in Richmond, south Nelson just after 3.30pm.
The sports centre was occupied at the time, but all occupants evacuated the building safely and there are no reports of injury.
Fire crews had to cut a hole in the building’s backdoor to gain entry.
Fire and Emergency Station Manager Rob Appleton told 1 NEWS there was “significant fire and smoke damage to the interior”.
It’s believed the fire was sparked by an electric blower that powers a bouncy castle.
Fire investigators are at the scene working to confirm that theory.
The fire has now been put out.
