A group of kayakers ran into troubled waters this afternoon in Days Bay, Wellington when their kayaks tipped over and they had to be rescued by members of the public.
Senior Sergeant Quentin Ward says although the incident had a happy ending, the situation could have been much worse.
“It’s sunny today and the water looks beautiful, but the wind is making conditions very rough,” he pointed out.
He stressed the importance of life jackets and making sure those on the water tell people where they are going.
“When going out on the water, people need to be aware of the wind direction to make sure they’re not going to be blown away from shore.
"It’s also a great idea to take a waterproof cell phone or a phone in a sealed plastic bag," he said.
