Black Caps coach Gary Stead has stuck up for the misfiring Colin Munro after another failure with the bat, as his side went 2-0 down in the five-match ODI series with India in Mount Maunganui last night.

With New Zealand chasing 325 to level the series, Munro was dismissed for just 31, out LBW attempting a switch-hit, as the Black Caps went on to a 90-run defeat. They are now facing the prospect of having to win three straight matches for victory against the world's number two side.

The dismissal is just the latest failure for Munro in the 50-over format, with the hard-hitting left hander averaging just 25.74 from 48 matches - having never made a One Day International hundred.

Speaking to media at Bay Oval last night, though, coach Stead assured that he has faith in Munro to continue at the top of the order.

"I thought he [Munro] started really well," Stead began.

"He was looking assured at the crease. I thought he took his time.

"He played one shot that didn't go his way. If he turns around and switch hits it and it goes for four, then everyone claps and says great shot.

"Colin plays the switch hit [and] the reverse sweep. My word for him won't be to take it out of his game, but to be more selective in when he plays it."
