Auckland's Onehunga train line is now running as normal, while the Southern, Eastern and Western lines are running every 20 minutes, after the whole network ground to a standstill earlier this morning due to a signal fault.
Services will operate with six car units, as far as possible and rail replacement buses will continue to operate during the afternoon peak, Auckland transport said in a statement.
Talking to RNZ, KiwiRail chief operations officer Henare Clarke said that the cause of the fault was still under investigation, with teams frantically trying to resolve the issue.
"Some trains are now moving in the city on a third, older system while a team of 25 from around the country look to fix the issue. Investigations are centring on a controlling system in Auckland," he said.

AT advises that buses are accepting all train tickets and AT HOP cards, as an alternative means of transport.
"If you are looking for alternatives means for travel, deselect the 'Train' option on the Journey Planner or AT Mobile app," AT says.
"You can still use train stations as locations when searching your options."
There has been no word from Auckland Transport as to when services will resume.
Auckland Transport has advised that automatic refunds will be issued to people who have a registered AT HOP card and whose travel was disrupted this morning.
Other affected customers will need to go to a customer service centre for a refund.
