The Black Sticks women know the challenge they're up against when they host the world no.1 Netherlands in Auckland this weekend - but they're excited for it.

New coach Sean Dancer has named an experienced side to compete in the opening match of the FIH Pro League at North Harbour Hockey Stadium on Sunday afternoon, featuring three players with more than 200 matches of international experience in the team's ranks.

Striker Olivia Merry, who has 205 caps for the side, told 1 NEWS the match was a perfect start to 2019.

"No better way to start it than playing the best in the world," She said.

"It's going to be an epic opportunity and out here at home, it's going to be awesome - hopefully we get a big crowd in."

Merry said the team knows what to expect from the Dutch, recalling a fiery World League clash held in Auckland in November 2017 where teammate and defender Sam Charlton was shoved into the ground by an opponent.

"They are so physical and are very skilful players," she said.

"It's always going to be competitive when you come across them and I definitely expect it."

The Black Sticks women play the Netherlands at 2:30pm on Sunday.

Black Sticks Women:  Sally Rutherford, Grace O’Hanlon, Sam Charlton, Tarryn Davey, Frances Davies, Shiloh Gloyn, Ella Gunson, Megan Hull, Tessa Jopp, Rose Keddell, Olivia Merry, Stacey Michelsen, Brooke Neal, Kirsten Pearce, Olivia Shannon, Kelsey Smith, Liz Thompson, Amy Robinson
