Fuel tanker rolls, blocking State Highway 1 near Taupō

A fuel tanker has rolled near Taupō, causing a stretch of State Highway 1 to be closed.

The crash happened on in Ohakuri, near Chestnut and Thorpe Roads, about 7.40am, police said in a statement.

"The driver is not seriously injured but the southbound lane is blocked and may be for some time," the statement says.

Police later decided to close the highway completely between Atiamuri and Wairakei, with a detour via Mokai. 

People have been asked to avoid the area.
