Police are trying to trace three witnesses to an incident in which a man was shot in the leg at a camp site near Cape Palliser on the southern tip of the North Island.
Police say at about 10.30pm on Sunday December 16, a vehicle arrived at the Ngawi camp ground where at least three male occupants confronted the 46-year-old victim.
After a short verbal altercation a shot was fired by one of the group and the victim received a bullet wound to his thigh.
Detective Sergeant Bill van Woerkom says police have made good progress and are confident they will identify those responsible, but still require further assistance from the public.
Police are specifically wanting to hear from three witnesses who were staying at the camp ground on December 16.
The witnesses sought are a young German man travelling with two others who are believed to be working in the region.
They may be travelling in a white van.
