A change of law in New York now requires all new public toilets to include baby changing tables in men's bathrooms.
The new law came into effect at the beginning of 2019 means that new and renovated buildings with public toilets need to include changing tables in men and women's bathrooms.
Governor of New York Andrew Cuomo announced the changes in a statement last April which included "equal access to diaper changing stations and to provide lactation rooms in state buildings that are open to public".
The new policy applies to new or substantially renovated businesses, such as restaurants and movie theatres.
New York Senator Brad Hoylman, who wrote the legislation, said it was about "taking an important step in recognising changing parental norms, including a new generation of gay dads like me who no longer should have to change their babies on the bathroom floor because there's no changing station in the men's restroom".
Prior to the law change, all publicly accessible bathrooms in New York were not required to have changing tables.
"This means that parents and caregivers of young children often struggle to find a safe, sanitary place to change their child's diaper," Mr Cuomo's statement reads.
"Many parents and caregivers have been forced to change a diaper in public, to use unsafe, unsanitary bathroom sinks, or even to delay changing a diaper altogether."
