One-year-old girl drowns at Canterbury property

A toddler has died at an Ashburton property after falling into a "body of water," police say.

Emergency services were called at 5.20 last night and a helicopter was dispatched to a Maronan Valetta Road address.

Senior Sergeant Matt Emery from Ashburton Police says the one-year-old was found unresponsive.

She was flown to Christchurch hospital but later died. 

Police extend their sympathies to the girl's family at this difficult time.
