One person dead after vehicle crashes into tree in Canterbury

One person has died after a vehicle crashed into a tree in Canterbury this afternoon.

Police say the crash happened on Domett Road, near Darrochs Road, in the Hurunui District around 4:20pm.

The sole occupant of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.

Traffic is reduced to one lane at this stage while emergency services work at the scene.

Motorists are asked to drive with patience and avoid the area if possible.

The Serious Crash Unit is attending.
