Police are pleased with how festival-goers handled themselves with only six arrests were made over the two days the Bay Dreams festival took place in Nelson.

90 police officers were on the ground, with 15 brought up from the Canterbury region to support staff.

Nelson Bays area commander Inspector Paul Borrell told 1 NEWS he’s "very happy" with how the night played out.

"People were fantastic and clearly looking out for their mates," he said.

It’s the first time Nelson has hosted the major music event, with all 20,000 tickets selling out in three weeks.

Mayor Rachel Reese said it was the biggest event Nelson had ever staged, surpassing the All Blacks test match at Trafalgar Park last September.

There were signs of some drug use at the event, which Inspector Borrel says was "aggravated" by nearly 30 degree temperatures.

An update on the number of festival-goers seen by medical staff is due shortly.
