The man at the centre of yesterday's Terrace Tunnel incident in Wellington has been charged this morning.

Police confirmed the 31-year-old has been charged with dangerous driving causing injury and possession of an offensive weapon.

The charges come after the man climbed down from the top of the tunnel at 10:30pm last night after an almost 11-hour standoff with police which saw him speaking to a family member and police negotiators.

The man climbed up until the roof of the tunnel after being involved in a two-car crash in which one vehicle was driving the wrong way.

While on the pipes, police closed the Terrace Tunnel which caused heavy traffic congestion around the city and even saw some bus stops closed.
