A person has died in Auckland overnight in what police are describing as an "unexplained death".

Police say they attended the scene of the death on Maru Road in Takanini after it was reported to them at 8.40pm on Wednesday.

Police told 1 NEWS the deceased is a middle-aged man who was found on the lawn of a property with blood coming from his head.

Forensic investigators have attended the scene.
