Around 50,000 chickens have died after a fire tore through an Auckland poultry farm early this morning.

Three sheds were also destroyed in the Henderson blaze at 1.30am.

All but one complex at the Stoney Creek Farm burned to the ground.

The barn-raised chickens were farmed by a contractor for Tegel, the company confirmed.

An investigation into the incident is currently underway.
