About 600 flights and 40,000 passengers are expected to take place on Air New Zealand's busiest day of the year today.

Passengers are being asked to be patient at airports and to allow plenty of time to get to the airport.

Air New Zealand will carry more than 6 million customers between December 1 and March next year, they say.

An engineers strike that was planned for this week was called off on December 13 after the union representing the workers reached a deal with the airline.

That strike, should it have gone ahead, would have led to disruptions for up to 120,000 customers in the lead up to Christmas.

Travellers should check the Air New Zealand website here for the latest information on their flights.
