Cruise industry commits to 40 per cent lower emissions by 2030

December 21, 2018

The Cruise Lines International Association says its members have committed to reducing their emission levels by 40 per cent by 2030.

The level will be baselined against their 2008 emissions level, for reasons which weren't immediately clear.

A spokesperson said this will be accomplished in part by the increasing use of liquid natural gas as a fuel source, and through new exhaust mitigation technology.

The CLIA said the industry's first LNG-power ships have launched this week and about 25 such ships could be in operation by 2025.

"Emissions rates will be calculated based on the industry fleet’s total carbon emissions, total ship berths and total distance travelled," the CLIA said in a statement.

"CLIA plans to report annually on the industry’s progress toward the commitment."

The CLIA is the world's largest cruise industry trade association.
