An Auckland woman dying from cancer who was forced out of a state house due to mould has been given a clean dry home to live in.

It's taken a year of pleas from Makeleta Vahai's daughter, as well as letters from doctors, to get the 78-year-old somewhere more comfortable to live.

"It's not fair my mum has to suffer because it's not her choice to be sick," Taeiloa Vahai told 1 NEWS.

Ms Vahai had been living in a Mangere state house that's leaking, full of mould and is set for demolition.

Housing New Zealand recently moved Ms Vahai into emergency accommodation at an Auckland motel.

Now, she will be moving into a clean dry home just in time for Christmas.

"The house is a three bedroom, they've redecorated the house and they've made a walk in shower for mum that suits her needs.

"It's what I had been asking for so I'm really happy with that," Ms Vahai's daughter Taeiloa says.

In a statement Housing New Zealand says the family's circumstances and needs changed over the last year and it didn't get clear timely information about the assistance the family needed.
