A police officer in Ohio has taken to social media and posted a wakeup call for all drivers after fining an 18-year-old for speeding.
The post on the North Ridgeville Police Department Facebook page comes during the holiday season where the road toll last year in America for the Christmas period was 231.
The post which was directed to the young person started off saying they were welcome the officer pulled them over.
“I’d like to believe that you were minutes away from creating an unspeakable Christmas tragedy when I stopped you.”
Further on down the post details the officers experience of having to tell parents and loved ones the terrible news their child had been in a fatal car crash.
“When they get a knock on the door, it’s not “Good afternoon ma’am. Your 18-year-old son just had a massive heart attack. It’s “Can we sit down? Your son has been involved in a very serious crash. I’m so sorry. He’s died.”
The officer urges the teenager to be safe while driving and not drive recklessly.
“I can tell you dozens of stories of dead and broken 18-year-old bodies that I’ve pulled from cars. Broken bodies that I’ve found in front yards after crashes. Unrecognizable bodies. They thought they were invincible too”
The post ended with the officer saying “Slow down. Please. You are not invincible. I promise.”
Last year New Zealand's holiday road toll was at 12, with 380 people killed on the roads in 2017 in total.
