Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters has met with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo at the State Department in Washington, DC.

The pair discussed the denuclearisation of North Korea, as well as New Zealand's efforts in counter-terrorism in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Deputy Prime Minister says the US is a very close strategic partner for Aotearoa.

Mr Peters is also set to meet with Vice President Mike Pence.

In a speech at nearby Georgetown University over the weekend, Mr Peters called on the US to boost aid to the Pacific region - alluding, it appeared, to increasing influence from China.

"The speed and intensity of those interests at play are of great concern to us," he said. "Our eyes are wide open to this trajectory and we know that yours are too."
