Hope is on the horizon for Wellington motorists as a small part of Transmission Gully is opening this week.
The new highway cuts through an inland valley and is set to ease traffic for those heading north on State Highway 1 in the Wellington region.
The road will also bring security, with it being future-proofed to handle earthquakes and storms.
