Brazilian woman who tried to smuggle cocaine into NZ jailed for over six years

A Brazilian woman who tried to smuggle almost a kilo of cocaine into New Zealand was sentenced to more than six years in prison yesterday afternoon.

Pamela Nascimento, 23, was stopped and questioned by Customs following her arrival at Auckland Airport in September after travelling from Sao Paulo.

Nascimento initially claimed she was not carrying any prohibited items but drugs were later found in her clothing. She also admitted to swallowing around 40 pellets containing cocaine.

Nasciamento was found to be carrying 923 grams of cocaine, which has an estimated street value of between $138,500 and $175,500.

She was sentenced to six years and three months in prison.

The maximum penalty for importing cocaine and other class A drugs is life imprisonment.
