An incident at a Young National event is being investigated by police after allegations of inappropriate behaviour.

Newsroom  reported a 17-year-old female, who was not a member of the Young Nats, alleged inappropriate touching by a male from the group.

The woman claimed the man attempted to kiss her, was pursued by him after leaving a nearby apartment and that he continued to attempt to grope her, the article stated.

The article stated two National MPs were at the event last week.

National Party leader Simon Bridges said he was informed about the incident late last week.

"I sought assurances that everything had been handled and dealt with appropriately. It seems clear to me it has, that they followed very strongly a health and safety plan and did all of the right things, both at the Young Nats' event and then post it.

He said when it came to the Party’s attention "it was handled, I think, very responsibly".

"It was made clear to the complainant what her options were and indeed she was encouraged to go to the police, which is what’s happened."

"We entirely support that decision."

He said there may have been a small number of National MPs at the event, but not after where the incident was alleged to have happened.

Mr Bridges said it was "regrettable".

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said individual cases were for individual parties.

However, she said "we all have a duty of care and if there's anything we've seen out of the international movements on this, we do all have a responsibility".

A police spokesperson told 1 NEWS they were investigating a complaint relating to an alleged incident in Auckland Central on November 20.

"Police are currently making inquiries and we are not in a position to provide further details at this stage," the spokesperson said.

The man has been suspended from Young Nats and had been banned from any future gatherings, the Newsroom article reported.
