Miss World New Zealand Jess Tyson has been praised for her "bravery" in starting a charity which raises awareness of sexual violence among young New Zealanders.
Competing in Sanya, China at the 68th Miss World final Tyson told TVNZ1's Te Karere fellow contestants have spoken to her about their own experiences of sexual abuse.
"Two have spoken to me about their own experiences," says Tyson.
"The fact that there’s someone here who’s shared their experience makes them feel comfortable."
The 25-year-old is one of 118 contestants from around the world gunning to be crowned the winner at this year’s Miss World 2018.
Ms Tyson is hoping to be one of 20 women chosen to go through to the next round to speak about her Beauty with a Purpose project Brave.
Each Miss World titleholder works with a charity on a Beauty with a Purpose project on an issue that affects young people in their country.
Having been a victim of sexual abuse as a child Tyson created her own charity Brave which raises awareness of sexual violence among young people.
Tyson says her story has resonated with other contestants in the competition.
"They have said that I’ve been really brave."
Ms Tyson is yet to find out whether she will be heading to the final which will be held on December 8.
