They may be making history, but the under 17s Football Ferns are making sure they remain grounded after their stunning World Cup quarter-final win in Uruguay over the weekend.
The U17s stunned Japan yesterday in a penalty shootout to advance to the semi-finals thanks to the winning goal from keeper Anna Leat.
Leat told TVNZ1's Breakfast this morning she survived the "massive doggy-pile" to celebrate her glorious moment.
"Got back, had game day pizza and went out for a nice bonfire with the team - it was pretty cool."
Captain Aneka Mittendorff said while the team had surpassed their goals for the tournament, they're ready to keep causing upsets.
"We're still focused and grounded.
"We're just going to keep up the positive vibes that are happening in the campaign at the moment."
Leat added they know they face a big challenge in football giants Spain, but they're used to the underdogs tag.
"New Zealand usually is [underdogs] so we're pretty happy, I think everyone is pretty comfortable with that title and it just adds to the joy of it when you get those results."
The young Football Ferns face off with Spain for a spot in the final on Thursday morning.
