The Department of Conservation, DOC, is appealing to the public for help in refloating eight stranded pygmy whales in the Far North tomorrow.
At least eight pygmy killer whales remain stranded on Ninety Mile Beach in the Far North, with two of the pod now dead.
In an update this afternoon, DOC says "the eight alive pygmy whales are being moved from 90 Mile Beach to Rarawa Beach on the east coast as there is a higher chance of a successful refloat from this beach due to the conditions.

"The whales will be moved this afternoon via trailer a distance of approx. 18km by road."
The pod became stranded near Te Paki Stream along a 5km stretch of sand last night.
DOC hopes to refloat the whales tomorrow at the high tide around midday and have asked the public for help.
"DOC needs public help tomorrow (Tuesday) at Rarawa Beach. Please arrive from 6am and report to the Rarawa Campground Check in area."
Pygmy killer whales are a type of oceanic dolphin which are rarely seen, and their average length is just over two metres.

People should be advised to bring a wetsuit if they have them, warm clothing including a change of warm clothing, a sunhat and sun block, plenty of food and drink.
People without wetsuits can help care for whales on the beach before a refloat attempt but volunteers usually must wear a wetsuit when assisting with the refloating phase of the rescue.
Please bring sheets, shovels and buckets – some may be needed.

• Wet suit: will not be allowed in the water without a wetsuit for safety reasons.
• Wind proof jacket
• Sturdy shoes or wet suit booties
• Shorts and long-sleeved shirt
• Warm clothing and a hat for cold conditions
• Water proof jacket and trousers for cold conditions
• Sunhat, sunglasses, sun block
• Ample food and drink
• Shovels and buckets
• Durable rubber or diving gloves
• A complete change of warm clothes
