Christchurch's long-awaited promenade officially opened today.

Hundreds celebrated the official opening of Christchurch’s newest rebuild project today.

The $120-million project connects the CBD along the Avon River.

"This isn't just about buildings, this is about bringing people back into the city, it's about connecting the city back up again," says Greater Christchurch Regeneration Minister Megan Woods.

The promenade took five years to complete and is seen as a sign of progress for the locals.

“It’s nice seeing the city back up and running again," she says.

"It's just indicative of how vibrant Christchurch is post-earthquake now."

The two-kilometre promenade is one of the city's biggest redevelopment projects. The convention centre is next on the list expected to open in 2020.

There's 13 key rebuild anchor projects were all supposed to be finished in 2017 .

So far just four have been finished. Minister Megan Woods believes they're finally gaining some momentum.

"We've got the metro sports facility back on track, we've got ground works happening there, and just this week the mayor and I were down looking at the groundworks doing the testing that's happening on site for the stadium,” Ms Woods says.
