Stranded whale at Northland beach confirmed dead this morning

The large whale which was found stranded at a Northland beach yesterday afternoon, has died this morning.

The Department of Conservation (DOC) were called to Tokerau Beach on the Karikari Peninsula at 4.30pm yesterday, to what was thought to be a humpback whale.

The whale was about 10 metres off shore and the full tide brought the animal in further. 

DOC are in discussions with local iwi about what happens next.
