Large whale, believed to be a humpback, stranded on Far North beach

A large whale, thought to be a humpback, has been found stranded on a Far North beach this afternoon.

The Department of Conservation (DOC) were called to Tokerau Beach on the Karikari Peninsula at 4.30pm.

The whale is believed to be around 10 metres off shore, with the full tide bringing the animal closer in.

DOC are currently assessing the situation at the beach.
