Police hunt pair over 'unprovoked, senseless' knife attack on two men outside Auckland bar

November 20, 2018

Police are appealing for witnesses to what they call an unprovoked and senseless attack on two men following an altercation outside a bar in Auckland's Ponsonby at the weekend.

Detective Senior Sergeant Baldwin says a group had been socialising at a bar on Mackelvie Street at about 1.40am on Sunday, and outside the bar, two of the men in the group got into a verbal exchange with two male offenders who were unknown to them.

The two offenders tried to provoke the victims into a fight but both victims tried to defuse the situation and walk away.

However, one of the offenders then punched one of the victims.

The second attacker went to a nearby car, retrieved two knives and attacked both victims.

A 21-year-old male received a number of lacerations to his face and head area, while another man was cut across the back of his hand.

Both were taken to Auckland City Hospital.

Mr Baldwin says one of the victim’s injuries were serious, but not life threatening.

"We need the community’s help to solve this unprovoked, senseless and unnecessary attack," he said.

"We want to hear from anyone who might have been in the area at the time of this incident."

Both alleged offenders are believed to be of Pacific Island origin, of heavy build and aged between 20 and 35.

The first was wearing a red t-shirt and had long hair, possibly with braids. The other was wearing a black t-shirt.

"Someone will know who these men are and they need to do the right thing and contact us," Mr Baldwin said.

"We would remind everyone that anyone found to be carrying a knife or any weapon is breaking the law and could face prosecution."

Police say inquiries into the incident are ongoing.

Anyone who witnessed the attack is asked to contact Police on 09 302 6400 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
