Evacuation on Rainbow's End ride: Corkscrew coaster leaves riders in the lurch

It wasn't quite the type of thrill they were looking for.

Fifteen riders on a Rainbow’s End roller coaster had to be evacuated off it this morning after it stopped mid-ride – leaving riders lurched at its steepest point, roughly 27 metres in the air.

An official for the Auckland theme park told the NZ Herald a back-up safety mechanism, which was designed to stop on the incline if it detected something was wrong, caused the ride to halt.

"This is exactly what is supposed to happen to ensure we check the ride, and ensure the ride is totally safe," CEO Karen Crabb told the newspaper. "The guests were escorted off the coaster by our team members who took them down the stairs."

She said such occurences are rare for the rollercoaster, which features a loop and a double corkscrew. The last time was in 2015, when it overheated and stalled for about 10 minutes at it’s steepest incline.
