Two men who died following a crash between a car and a tourist bus near Kingston, south of Queenstown, last week were 23-year-old American tourists.

One man died at the scene of the crash on State Highway Six on the morning of last Thursday, November 1, and a second man died overnight.

Police have this afternoon named the man who died at the scene as 23-year-old American Spencer Jason Hom Dow.

The second man, who died overnight, is also a 23-year-old American, but police say he cannot yet be named.

According to Stuff, the two men met in New Zealand and were travelling around the country together.

Police say the cause of the crash is still being investigated and the matter has been referred to the coroner.

Police earlier said a rental car was heading north towards Queenstown when the driver crossed the centre line and collided head-on with the southbound bus just outside Kingston.

The seven passengers on the bus, plus the driver, were treated at Lakes District Hospital in Frankton with moderate to minor injuries.

This accident followed another crash involving a car and a bus carrying 14 tourists near the Devils Staircase south of Queenstown two weeks earlier, where one person died.
