A single mother left her two young children on the side of the road in North Carolina as she "was so tired of doing this by myself".
Jennifer Westfall, 38, dumped her 19-month-old and nine-year-old children on a road near Reedy Creek Elementary school, police told local broadcaster ABC 11.
Police say a woman saw the incident unfold and brought the kids into the school before alerting Child Protective Services.
Westfall told police she dropped the children off at the school as she thought it was a legal way to abandon them.
"I know what I did was wrong but I just, I was so tired of doing this by myself," The New York Post reports Westfall told police.
"I have the strength to do what I need to do but I don’t have the skills to make the income that I need to take care of my family, and nobody will hire me. I’ve been around everywhere. And with these charges I just don’t see how I’m ever getting my kids back."
Westfall was arrested at her home last Monday and charged with two counts of misdemeanor child abuse.
She was released from jail Friday and is due to appear in court later this month.
