Former All Blacks winger Julian Savea has flipped his car, with wife Fatima saying that he'd fallen asleep behind the wheel in France.

Now playing for Toulon, Savea, 28, crashed his car after his side's Top14 win over Perpignan this morning.

Posting on Instagram, Fatima Savea said that her husband was unharmed in the incident.

"Tonight Julian fell asleep behind the wheels [sic] of his car and flipped his car," she wrote.

"Thankfully he is safe and sound in bed with me now after being dropped home by the ambulance because silly me had her phone on silent and missed all the calls and texts."

She also said that alcohol had not played any part in the crash.

"Firstly, he's been sober 8 months (woohoo). Secondly, the police did a full test etc and lastly, who's dumb enough to drink and drive?

"I am just so thankful to have him home safe!"
