A political commentator says ‘the train wreck continues along the tracks’ for National after the leaking of a new phone recording this morning, the latest Jami-Lee Ross induced headache for the party.
Dr Bryce Edwards told TVNZ's Breakfast that in the taped conversation between former National MP Jami-Lee Ross, party leader Simon Bridges and deputy Paula Bennett, the leadership are trying to protect National's reputation.
In an earlier interview on Breakfast, Mr Bridges denied putting the party ahead of Mr Lee-Ross and the women who had complained about his behavour.
The trio discuss whether family or medical reasons will be given as the explanation for Mr Ross’ leave as the National Party leaders promise not to reveal the nature of his alleged wrongdoing.
Dr Edwards says they broke that promise when he went rogue, making a series on damning allegations about Mr Bridges and releasing other recordings.
He says once Mr Lee-Ross went rogue they were much happier to talk about those allegations, including Ms Bennett saying he wasn't acting appropriately for a married man.

"They hit back absolutely, they were quite happy to use those allegations against him when they were under fire from him.
"No one comes out well from this, it is a dirty, tort jury business."
Mr Lee-Ross, who was expelled from the National Party, says he will return as an independent MP once he is back from sick leave.
He plans on contesting the Botany by-election.
