Eager electric scooter riders have tested their abilities in Auckland this afternoon during a race in Ponsonby.
The e-scooters, which were launched in Auckland and Christchurch this month, can be hired by the public through a phone app.
However, the scooters have already caused controversy, with many concerned about safety.
"Police and Auckland Transport were both happy, they just wanted safety. Auckland Transport just wanted to make sure they all wore helmets, which I can understand. Public safety's paramount," bar owner Luke Dallow said.
Those competing in the race had to be sober, with police saying scooter riders could be charged with careless use of a vehicle if they were found to be under the influence of alcohol.
