Auckland Council is suggesting for the Government to ban the public sale of fireworks in the lead up to Guy Fawkes celebrations early next month.
Auckland councillor Linda Cooper said: "You see a lot on fireworks night. 'Oh, I can't get my kids to sleep', 'my dog's run away', 'my horse has gone through a fence', those sorts of things - to at least ask people and see what they think about it".
However, shop owner Barry Wah Lee, who has been selling fireworks for decades, doesn't see what the concern is.
Mr Lee said: "Some people, long-term, should be teaching their pets to be more animal as they are and able to handle lightning, whatever loud noises, claps, you know?"
Mary Allen, a pyrotechnician who works in Mr Lee's store, said: "We've got restrictions on the size of them and we've also got age restrictions, so as long as people act responsibility within those parameters, I think it's OK".
Environment Minister David Parker told 1 NEWS he has no plans to change the law.
Currently, anyone buying fireworks are able to light them on publicly-owned land.
