All Blacks coach Steve Hansen didn't mince his words when asked about the yellow card awarded to Wallabies reserve hooker Tolu Latu in his side's 37-20 win in Yokohama.

Latu, 25, was sent to the bin in the second half of his side's defeat, after reacting to a shove from All Blacks opposite Codie Taylor, connecting with an open palm to the face.

Asked in his post match media conference, Hansen had harsh feedback for Latu.

"You're not allowed to strike someone in the face, it was pretty dumb wasn't it," he said.

"You do dumb things, you get dumb reactions.

"The ref had no other option by the law, if he hadn't done it, he probably would have got tuned up by his bosses. He's just done what the law says he should do and give the guy 10 minutes.

"Sport brings out moments where you overreact, their young hooker's overreacted to something. To be honest, Codie did too. Thankfully he didn't hit him in the head.

"It was a lot about nothing really."
