A 55-year-old man has admitted killing Nicole Tuxford in April this year after waiting inside her house for her to get home.
The Aranui man pleaded guilty at Christchurch High Court today, police said, to killing the 27-year-old by cutting her throat on April 7.
Police confirmed the man was stopped at a breath testing checkpoint earlier that night, which he failed, and he was processed and went on his way in a taxi. They said he went straight to Ms Tuxford's house.
He got inside and waited there for most of the night until she came home the next morning.
Police Detective Inspector Darryl Sweeney said they are confident their staff acted properly at the breath testing checkpoint.
"Those experienced staff did not and could not know of his intentions when he left the checkpoint," he said.
"His behaviour at the time gave no cause for concern, and there is no test which can predict human behaviour in these circumstances."
Mr Sweeney said the police staff who were at the checkpoint had been deeply affected by Ms Tuxford's death.
