Five students and two teachers have been hospitalised after a gas canister on a cooker exploded at De La Salle College in Auckland.
The student who was cooking suffered burns to his face and was one of the five taken to Middlemore Hospital.
"He seems to be in a good spirit, I saw him before he left,” Sergeant Oliver Nation said.
The rest of the injuries were described as minor.
Principal Myles Hogarty said the canister that exploded was about the size of a can of fly spray.
The explosion appeared to have been caused by a fault in the canister, Sergeant Nation said.
Worksafe NZ will investigate the incident, which occurred as students were cooking for an economics assignment.
