Heartbroken Aussie man awakens from coma to find wife, pregnant with twins, died in car crash

October 9, 2018

An Australian man has awoken from his induced coma to discover the heartbreaking news his wife, who was pregnant with twins, died in a car crash.

Bronko Hoang was sedated after he received head injuries in the fatal crash two weeks ago in western Sydney but the accident killed his 23-year-old pregnant wife, Katherine.

The 25-year-old's aunt told the Daily Telegraph the news destroyed him.

"He screamed so loudly, 'Why Katherine? Please not the babies'," Pham Crawford said.

"He can't stop crying and feels guilty he's the only one who survived."

The couple had only been married for a few months when the crash happened and it's understood Mrs Hoang was heavily pregnant at the time. They met years ago at the Western Sydney University Taekwondo club before falling in love.

She was sitting in the back of the car while Mr Hoang was giving driving lessons to a 17-year-old - the teenager also died in the crash.

The driver of the other vehicle, 29-year-old Richard Moananu, was allegedly driving at 45km/h above the speed limit when the crash happened just after 7:30pm on Friday, September 28. It's understood two other vehicles were forced to take evasive action to avoid the wrecks.

Moananu was allegedly unlicensed and was charged with 10 offences at his bedside in hospital, including two counts of manslaughter and several dangerous driving offences.
