The design for the new skyscraper to be built on Auckland's Federal Street has been confirmed after winning the design competition among four other entries.
ICD Property will build a new $200 million, 180m, 48-storey tower at 65 Federal Street, close to the Sky Tower, and it is due to be completed by 2022.
The building was designed by Australian architects Woods Bagot in partnership with Kiwi firm Peddle Thorp.
Four other firms entered designs - Warren and Mahoney, Zaha Hadid, Elenberg Fraser and Cox Architecture.
The building will contain 233 five-star hotel rooms, 226 new apartments, a ground-floor marketplace and an upper level "zen garden".
Woods Bagot principal and design lead Peter Miglis said during his pitch in June that the design "is a strong, city-defining tower with an elegant silhouette that is enduring for the skyline of Auckland and provides a companion to the city's iconic Sky Tower".
Peddle Thorp director Richard Goldie said curved and pleated timber will be used extensively on the interior, while the exterior will have a crystalline look.
"Our major civic buildings, the Auckland Museum and Auckland Art Gallery, both use timber to stunning effect," Mr Goldie told Architecture Now.
"It's the material with which we privilege our most significant buildings and the curved timber designs we have created will be prominent on the lower levels of 65 Federal St for everyone to see and share."
The building is the latest large skyscraper to be announced for Auckland in recent years, joining Commercial Bay and the Seascape Apartments.
