More than $3,000 has been raised for the family of missing Napier man Alex Latimer.
The 30-year-old hasn't been seen since September 30 and his car was found burnt out on the side of a Napier road a week ago.
Police carried out an extensive search of a property on State Highway 5 near Te Haroto from Thursday and revealed they had found a body on Saturday.
They say they believe the body is Alex but are carrying out formal identification and a post mortem today.
A Givelittle page has been set up to go towards the family and funeral costs "so that they have the time they need to grieve, and so that Alex can be farewelled (sic) with the respect that he absolutely deserves".
The page describes Alex as a "gentle, compassionate and caring person, who would do anything at the drop of a hat for his family and friends".
"This loss is not only a huge shock to the Napier community, but also to his family and wide spread friends, whilst also being completely undeserving."
Two men have been charged with assaulting Alex Latimer and have been remanded in custody.
Police say further charges are likely.
