Gull New Zealand is looking to open a service station in Wellington, as petrol prices reach record highs.
A Gull New Zealand spokesperson told 1 NEWS the move was "highly likely", and expected an opening timeframe of 12-18 months.
"It's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when."
"We're looking actively looking for sites, we're currently negotiating on a number of sites."
He said it was "all subject to getting the site secured" and consents, the approval process and signing of the contract.
When asked if Gull was looking to bring about more competition in the Capital, he said "absolutely".
"Watch this space."
They expected a 'Gull Effect', which references a price drop trend when the introduction of Gull petrol stations spur a petrol price drop in the area.
In May, Energy Minister Megan Woods said recent petrol price hikes were "exactly why we're pushing ahead to get the market study powers" - meaning companies would be made to provide information to enable the regulator to have a greater understanding of the fuel market.
It comes after Wellington and South Island 91 octane rose to $2.30 a litre in May, with a Z Energy spokesperson telling Newstalk ZB the price hike was mainly driven by international market increases that were passed along to customers.
