A spate of drink spiking incidents in Christchurch has led to police handing out warning pamphlets to people visiting bars.
The incidents come as a 33-year-old man faces charges of stupefying two women, Stuff reports.
The man is accused of sexually assaulting one of the women and attempting to sexually assault the other.
The two women were drinking together at Colombo Street's Mama Hooch bar before the alleged assaults took place at another location.
Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Anderson told Stuff police had noticed an upswing in drink spiking in the past month.
"Due to the increase in reporting ... it's about educating the community to be aware that this sort of thing could possibly be happening and be vigilant around their drinking when out in licensed premises," he said.
Police handed out warning pamphlets outside licensed premises last weekend, which included the following tips:
- Watch your drink and your friend's drinks at all times - when dancing, using the bathroom or talking to people.
- Don't drink any drinks that look cloudy, change colour or consistency, or don't taste right.
- Keep the drink as evidence if you suspect it has been tampered with and tell the bar manager or police.
- If you or a friend suddenly feel drowsy, have a trusted friend take them to a safe place rather than waiting it out.
- Don't leave your friends alone.
