Christchurch car meetup organiser says police 'baited' them into attacking a cop car

The organiser of a car enthusiast meetup in Christchurch over the weekend where a police car had its hood jumped on says police were asking for it.

Police were called to Sawyers Arms Road about 11.15pm on Saturday night, where multiple cars and people were blocking the roads.

The cars and spectators had met up as part of an event called Aves Invasion, and videos show hundreds of people in attendance.

During the night, a police car had its bonnet stomped on by one person as they tried to break up the meeting.

Organiser of the event Daniel Cossar told 1 NEWS "the cop car didn’t get approached by anyone, it drove into the crowd".

They said they believe police were asking for trouble by sending out a single patrol car to an event with hundreds of people on the street.

"I believe they baited the crowd by driving in with one officer," Mr Cossar said.

Rubbish had been left behind by attendees, and the organiser said they would look into addressing that at the next event.

Future attendees had also been warned not to touch police vehicles.

Police confirmed that no arrests were made and no injuries were reported, but said they are still making enquiries into the event.

Mr Cossar said car enthusiasts lack a place to do skids, and that he had tried to choose an area which was away from residential areas to keep disturbance to a minimum.

"We do not have a public venue to do skids, we have asked and asked but where else can we enjoy our cars?" he said.

"There is no venue at all in Christchurch at night time."

Until recently, a skid pad was available at certain hours at the Ruapuna Speedway, but it was shut down in 2016.

Christchurch has long had an issue with "boy racers", and introduced a bylaw in 2010 banning "cruising", but police have admitted it is difficult to police.

According to the Land Transport Act, it is prohibited to drive in convoys that impede traffic flow, or to repeatedly cruise the same stretch of road in a manner which "draws attention to the power or sound of the engine of the motor vehicle being driven".
