Smoke canister tossed as police deal with window washers, officer hospitalised

A police officer is in hospital after a smoke canister was thrown onto the road as police deal with window washers at a busy intersection.

Police say they were responding to a complaint about a large number of window washers at the intersection of Cavendish Drive and Te Irirangi Drive in Manukau about 3pm when a smoke canister was thrown onto the road.

One officer was taken to Middlemore Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation, and is in a stable condition.

Police are calling for any witnesses to the incident to contact them.
